Tamarac Lead Service Line Identification and Replacement Program

The City of Tamarac is actively identifying all service lines throughout the city and will replace any out-of-compliance service lines found within its distribution system before the EPA’s deadlines. If you receive notification from the city that you have a service line of unknown material, you can help this effort by identifying your service line and reporting the findings to the City’s Public Services Department. To identify your service line, you should have a licensed plumber identify your service lines.

Program Overview

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has mandated that all cities and utility departments throughout the United States, remove all lead water service lines and galvanized water service lines that were previously connected downstream of a lead line. Galvanized service lines that were previously connected downstream of a lead line are required to be replaced and are referred to as Galvanized Requiring Replacement or GRR. Cities and utilities who has at least one or more lead or GRR in its distribution system, must develop a Replacement Plan to replace those lines. The EPA’s mandate also requires that all cities and utilities implement and annually update a service line inventory of all service lines within their distribution system.

The law requires us to replace all lead and GRR service lines by 2034. Utilities must replace the entire lead or GRR: from the water main to the meter box (this pipe is owned by the City of Tamarac) and from the meter box to the connection inside the home (this pipe is owned by the homeowner). The City of Tamarac is actively identifying all service lines throughout the city and will replace any affected service lines found within its distribution system to meet the Federal Legislation. The City will notify homeowners and/or dwellers if their property is served by a lead, GRR or unknown service line material. The City is requesting that Homeowners notify the Public Services Department and report any lead or GRR service lines found on their property. The replacement of such lines on private property will be the responsibility of the homeowner. Currently the City of Tamarac has no record of lead or GRR lines in its distribution system and as such does not have a Replacement Plan. If any lead or GRR service lines are found, in the future, the City will implement a Replacement Plan and will notify any affected customers.

What is a Lead Service Line?

Service lines bring water from the water main in the street into your home. When water leaves the water treatment plant, it is clean and lead-free. The water mains underground that transport water from the treatment plant do not add lead to the drinking water. The first-time lead can enter the water is when it passes through a lead or GRR service line. Please note that the City of Tamarac does not have any records indicating that lead service lines ever existed within the city.
